Bulk Kosher Transport

When a road tanker, ISO tanker, or ship compartment has previously carried non-Kosher materials, it loses its Kosher status.

Even if the vessel appears clean after a standard rinse, Kosher regulations require a thorough cleansing process, known as "Kosherisation," to restore its Kosher status. This process typically involves:

• A pre-wash with detergent or caustic cleaning agents to remove any residue.
• A final deep clean using steam to ensure the vessel meets Kosher standards.

For liquids intended for Passover use, the requirements are even stricter. These must be transported in vessels specifically prepared to meet Kosher for Passover standards, ensuring no contact with chametz (leavened substances) or other prohibited materials.

Adhering to these protocols is crucial for maintaining the integrity of Kosher certification during transportation.

A Kosher-approved vessel is needed when carrying liquid materials or heated solid materials.

For solid materials carried at ambient temperature, there is no requirement to use a Kosher-certified road tanker, provided the vessel is visibly clean. This guideline applies to many common materials, including sugar, flour, and starches.

To ensure Kosher materials are supplied in Kosher-approved vessels, establish clear agreements with your supplier or logistics partner. Include the following requirements:

Certificate of Cleanliness:

Each delivery must be accompanied by a certificate confirming the vessel's cleanliness.

Documentation of Previous Cargoes:

The certificate should list the last three cargoes transported, all of which must be Kosher-compatible (refer to Section 7 for detailed guidelines).

Acceptance Criteria:

Do not accept deliveries that fail to meet these criteria.

If a tanker has previously carried incompatible cargo, it must undergo a suitable cleaning process before loading Kosher materials. For detailed cleaning procedures, refer to Section 4.

If a tanker has previously carried a non-Kosher-compatible cargo, its Kosher status must be restored through a specific washing process, depending on the nature of the incompatible cargo.

Two Levels of Incompatible Preloads

KF Kosher distinguishes between two types of non-compatible preloads:

1. Questionable Preloads:

A previous load may have been Kosher, but its status cannot be confirmed.

2. Non-Kosher Preloads:

A previous load is confirmed to have been non-Kosher.

Two Levels of Wash Procedures

Each type of problematic preload requires a specific washing solution:

1. Kosher Maintenance Wash

This procedure is suitable for tankers that have carried "questionable preloads".

Steps:

• Perform a cold or ambient rinse to remove as much residue as possible.
• Add soap or detergent to the rinse water.
• Introduce hot water only after a cold rinse or soap has been applied.
• Steam the tanker for 30 minutes or until the outlet water temperature reaches 88°C.

Conditions:

• Previous loads must be clearly documented in the Certificate of Cleanliness.
• This wash does not require a Rabbi’s supervision and can be conducted without on-site Kosher oversight.

2. Kosher Upgrade Wash

This process is required for tankers that have carried confirmed non-Kosher preloads.

Steps:

The procedure is similar to the Kosher Maintenance Wash but includes the following differences:

• A Rabbi typically supervises the wash to ensure compliance with Kosher requirements.
• Certain certified wash stations may perform a Kosher Upgrade Wash without a Rabbi’s attendance if they meet specific criteria.

P26 Certification

In Europe, many wash stations offer a "Kosher Wash," identified on the Certificate of Cleanliness as "P26".

Acceptance:

• The P26 procedure qualifies as a Kosher Maintenance Wash.
• It is not acceptable as a Kosher Upgrade Wash.

Non conformities

If a non-conformative tanker has been dispatched, company representatives should be in touch with KF Kosher for further guidance.

Kosher product and raw materials must be transported in Kosher transportation equipment.
